Adela Bačová: about the sauna Mini

Small, but handy. This is the motto that perfectly describes our new urban garden sauna. If it caused a wave of positive emotions in you, then you are in the right place! A few of the ideas behind the whole object were sweated for us by Adela — a designer who has sweated even the smallest addition to the What a Hut family of products.

How is the sauna created?

First of all, there must be a clear assignment — we must know what the object should bring to its owner. For this sauna, it was effective saunas in the intimate environment of the home, optimizing production and therefore prices. We wanted to create a sauna as small as possible, but it would not be deprived of ordinary sauna experiences and rituals. The main idea is then reflected in the design of the object. It can be material, glazing, color, in short, something key. We always try to make our products have some distinctive, memorable detail.

All products are then modeled in 3D software. Thus, we ourselves verify the correctness of the given solution, the size of the space or the color scheme. From the 3D model, realistic visualizations are created, which we present to the clients, as well as the production itself — milling spruce panels into the desired shape.

What does it mean for you to design a clean and minimalist object?

It means thinking over the details three times more. You can't hide anything in our saunas. An object made of solid panels looks clean and minimalist — and to keep that Zen feeling, we need to have everything thought out in advance. There is no room for experiments or “masking” errors, nor for changes after the documentation is approved. We know in advance exactly where and how we will lead each cable, lighting, where the substation will be, how the whole space will work.

The sauna is a material link to the What a Hut pilot plant. Aesthetically, they are different. Which elements are key in its design?

Characteristic is the large glazing, part of which is the entrance door. The second part consists of hardened double glazing, which we commonly use for larger glazing. We divided the window into two parts and connected it with a wooden lining, which is also located near the door. Thus, three harmonious units were created. The horizontal division follows the height of the upper bench, due to which a clean line is created, which connects to each other in two spatial planes. Otherwise, the mini sauna also features familiar elements from our larger saunas — such as the handrail or the colour scheme. I think that is very important in the final design.

How do you protect wood that is exposed to all seasons?

From the outside, it is treated with two layers of oil glaze — and it works well, both visually and technically. This glaze creates a fine layer that lets the wood drawing through — which was important to us because we didn't want to cover the quality and beautiful wood with solid color. At the same time, it closes the surface, thereby protecting the wood from mold and moisture, its color is constant and does not change even under the influence of UV radiation. However, the lifetime of the entire sauna depends on how it is cared for — it is a natural material after all. Therefore, after two years, it is recommended to repaint the exterior, the interior should be treated annually.

Bold colors can be used both indoors and outdoors. Do you think clients will be brave in this direction?

I'm hoping for it! In general, when designing products or interiors, we always look for a color accent. The place then feels livelier and more welcoming. For a small sauna, we enjoy the combination of different colors in the interior and exterior, but also the bold version, where all the walls are, for example, deep red. Thanks to these more expressive colors, the sauna feels confident and bold, and at the same time says something about its owners. Natural or black finish is classic and very popular — these shades fit literally to any plot, house or cottage. We choose colors so that they are harmonious, earthy, but at the same time that everyone finds something of their own in our palette - even a little playfulness.

Why did you decide to design a mini sauna and what plots do you think it is most suitable for?

We have included the mini sauna in the portfolio based on demand. Some of our clients prefer saunas in two, so we felt the need for a smaller version for a long time. At the same time, its size is determined by the production of panels — we optimized the building to the maximum — the production width of the panel is the width of the sauna. Due to this, no cuttings are formed. We designed the sauna to be suitable for any type of land — for spacious meadows and smaller gardens, where every metre is dealt with. So it doesn't matter so much on the location as on the type of users. It will delight those who prefer intimate saunas in smaller numbers. In addition, the lower pull-out bench offers additional seating, so that three people can sit comfortably. And of course it is also designed for those who like clean and minimalist objects, this is the essence of our saunas.

Can you tell us what other projects we can look forward to from the What a Hut workshop in the near future?

It was already lightly hinted at in the introduction of the article. We currently have several smaller products in development that will complement our sauna portfolio in new directions. One of the products will not be a sauna, but it will still warm you in the winter months and will be a great addition to saunas. Other products will be even smaller and will enrich the overall sauna experience in our saunas, but also in public spas. You can enjoy, for example, bathrobes or scented essences.
