Interview: Sauna na Žabě

Four friends have been toying with the idea of opening a community sauna near Horní Pond in Fryšták for several years. We met them for the first time at a community sauna in Zlín. And a few weeks later, our mobile workshop is already standing on the Žaba (Frog), where you can try it until the end of 2025 and at the same time support the establishment of a permanent community sauna on its shore. Read the story of the saunters who - like us - believe that the right municipality should not only have a good pub, but also a good sauna. We talked with Bob about the first steps and plans, you can book the sauna under this link.

Where did the idea of opening a community sauna in Fryšták come from? Did you meet for the first time in a sauna, or in a pub?

The idea of Sauna on the Žaba is many years old. This year we revived it thanks to the fact that the city of Fryšták published a participatory budget, to which we decided to subscribe our idea. We first met in September in a pub — and in this composition for the very first time in our lives. To make matters worse, one of us, Bob, broke his right arm on the way to the first sauna session without a sauna... At the end of September, we managed to register the project in the participatory budget of the municipality. Before the November voting began, we met for the second time, in your sauna in Sehradice. And on November 7, the sauna was already standing on the shore of the Žaba. On Monday, November 10, we organized our first community sauna session for the first time. And now we are starting the second month...

The pond, always referred to as the Žaba, has recently passed into the ownership of the city. What are his plans for him now?

The city plans to fundamentally revitalize it and modify it to become a place of active rest. In the future, it is planned to clean the pond, build a walkway around the water surface, create a beach volleyball court, water piers, a children's playground and a permanent sauna.

So the sauna is already part of the plan?

The mayor himself noted that the presence of a sauna will move the whole place a level higher. The combination of rest, nature and a cold pond is ideal.

What would you recommend to vacationers who want to take a walk or explore the surroundings before going to the sauna?

Pond na Žaba lies at the beginning of the Hostýn Hills, which are great for walking, cycling and running. Bob has twice organised a run around Žaba and then a shared sauna session. The ideal combination of movement and regeneration — this is Sauna na Zabá. Nearby you will find the ruins of Lukov Castle, the scout settlement Eliška, the beautiful view of Velá, many wells or a magical place called Fryštátské oko — a pool in the middle of the forest... Excellent is also the functioning Šenk na Žabě, which — as well as the sauna — is open daily until 22 pm. Everyone will find their own thing here.

There was an open day in the sauna a few days ago. How do you rate it?

It was a great experience for us and the visitors. Some came just to peek, wanting to make sure that the sauna on the Žaba really stood. They were interested in traffic. Most have tried it — and some have already returned.

Why is it important for you to build a community site in the village?

The pond on the Žaba used to be the venue of several popular events — the multi-sport festival Fair play, the Fryšták burning of witches or concerts on the Žaba. That place deserves people to visit it regularly again.

Who is the current and future sauna designed for?

The goal is to have a community sauna in Fryšták. So that a group of friends and girlfriends can meet here, who will regularly take a sauna. To suit them that there is a sauna in nature, that they cool off in a pond and that they also accept our idea: we are not wellness, we are Sauna on the Žaba.

David organizes an alternative music festival and a series of concerts Fryšták Small World. You already have a lot of experience with the community...

The event has a 25-year tradition. It is ridden by great bands and musicians from the alternative scene — it is always about quality music. Even Fryšták Small World was created so that something would be done in the village, so that bands and visitors would feel good and happy to come back. This year, smaller underground concerts have also been added to the program, which they organize all year round.

Bob, you organize races under the brand Běhy Zlín as well as the mentioned community runs in front of the sauna. How do you see the connection between movement and sauna? What procedure should athletes choose who also go to the sauna?

The purpose of the Běhy Zlín Association is to bring as many people as possible to active movement and to stay with it for as long as possible — ideally all their lives. To keep them entertained while staying healthy at the same time. And to any sport simply belongs regeneration, a key part of which is the sauna. You just need to play sports and then warm up your body and muscles properly in the sauna. Cooling off in the pond is then ideal for getting the blood flowing back to the muscles. And above all, do not forget to replenish fluids — you really sweat in Sauna na Zabá. ;-)

And what would you like to tell the village to believe that the sauna has its place in Fryšták?

We are Sauna na Zabá, we are not wellness. This is a great opportunity to improve the environment by the pond. And judging by the interest in the test operation, as well as by the number of votes in the participatory budget, it is clear that a lot of people really appreciate this service. We believe that the community Sauna na Žabá can be an inspiration for other municipalities that could build a similar project together.
